DAY 1 ARRIVE LISBON, PORTUGAL: Welcome to the Capital of Portugal. After clearing customs, meet with your Tour Director in the arrival hall of the airport. Shortly afterwards, begin you journey to the medieval walled city of Évora where cathedrals, churches, aqueducts and ancient castle walls all serve to create the feeling that this beautiful city is a living, breathing museum to Portugal's rich past. This afternoon, after some time to relax, join a local Englishspeaking expert to explore the highlights of this UNESCO World Heritage Site. See the Roman Temple and visit the Capela dos Ossos, an extraordinary 17th century chapel comprising the skulls and bones of 5,000 bodies. Visit thecathedral with its attractive mix of Romanesque and Gothic architecture. This evening enjoy a welcome dinner with wine. (D) DAY 2 EXCURSION TO MONSARAZ: Enjoy breakfast in your hotel. Afterwards, travel to the striking white village of Monsaraz, situated on an imposing hilltop, surrounded by cork oaks and vineyards. This small medieval town has carefully preserved its original charm. From the 13th-century castle you’ll enjoy amazing panoramic views of the countryside. Enjoy time for lunch on your own and some free time to explore. Then, indulge in a winery tour and a tasting of the full-bodied character of the region’s wines. Later, return to Évora where the evening is at your leisure to explore this beautifully preserved regional capital. (B) DAY 3 EVORA / THE ALGARVE: After breakfast, head south towards the beautiful Algarve. Geraniums, camellias and oleanders grow alongside fig, orange and almond trees while brightly colored fishing boats bob on the seas. Protected by hills to the north and warmed by the sea, the Algarve’s mild climate and beautiful beaches attract vacationers from all over the world. Explore the historic resort town of Lagos, where Moorish and Renaissance influences abound. Here, the famous voyager, Prince Henry the Navigator, began his explorations and from the harbor, Vasco da Gama sailed in 1499 on his epic voyage of discovery. Stroll through the fortress and historic buildings while taking in the surrounding ocean views during some leisure time. Check in to your resort located in Lagos and enjoy dinner this evening. (B/D) DAY 4 ALGARVE EXCURSION: Today, enjoy an excursion along the famous Algarve and discover the secrets of the 16thcentury fortress at Sagres, home of Prince Henry’s School of Navigation and the “compass rose.” You will also garner magnificent views of beautiful Cape of St. Vincente where 200-foot cliffs plunge into the Atlantic at the most southwesterly point of Europe. Later, return to your resort for overnight. (B) DAY 5 AT LEISURE: Enjoy breakfast followed by a full-day at leisure in Lagos. (B) DAY 6 LAGOS / LISBON: Enjoy breakfast. Afterwards, depart from Lago and make your way towards Lisbon, the capital city of Portugal. Enjoy some free time to explore. (B) DAY 7 LISBON: After breakfast, join your local English-speaking guide who takes you along the spacious avenues of the Lower Town and across the tree-shaded squares. Pass beneath the hilltop Bairro Alto to the Terreiro do Paço, the finest square in the city, named after the palace that was destroyed in the terrible earthquake of 1755, along with much of the rest of the city. Visit the Belém Quarter from where sailing ships once set forth to discover unknown lands. Enjoy a taste of Pastéis de Belém from the patisserie that has been using the same, secret recipe for almost 200 years. See the modern Monument to the Discoveries and the more ancient Belém Tower, erected to protect Jerónimos Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage Site which you visit. Your afternoon is free to explore. This evening enjoy dinner and traditional entertainment. Fado is the emotive folk music for which Lisbon is famous. To complete the experience, savor a typical Portuguese dinner, with wine included. (B/D) DAY 8 LISBON / USA: After breakfast, transfer to the airport for your return flight home. (B)
